Hi there,
hope you all had a great weekend. Yesterday, my Mr and me went to Scheveningen and took a stroll at the beach. We needed to get some fresh air and what better way to do that than at the beach. The weather was quite alright. Not really warm but at least sunny. And windy! We had ice cream and watched the surfers. Scheveningen itself was a bit disappointing. The city obviously spend a lot of money to make the sea boulevard LOOK pretty... which it does. But someone forgot to think practical because there are hardly any options for poeple with prams or wheelchairs to enter the boulevard. Only stairs, no ramps.
The second major drawback was the city. At some point I asked my Mr if the Germans had bombarded it because it was so ugly. I am not exaggerating. The minute you leave the beach you find yourself in a cluster of 70's and 80's mass-architecture that is very, very neglected. It feels depressing and sometimes even claustrophobic because they tried to cram as many high appartment buildings as possible on a small stretch of land. Dont get me wrong, there are pretty streets here and there, but there are not many and they are disrupted from each other by the concrete madness. Poor city. Some planning people really made and effort to erase every bit of seaside charme... and succeeded.
So, to sum it all up: Scheveningen has a nice beach with cosy beach bars. Food was expensive but that's how it is in The Netherlands, especially at the beach. The city is ugly and therefore we will not go again but rather go back to our trusted fav beach in Zandvoort which also is within biking distance.
HAve a nice start of the week.
My pistachio ice cream and me in front of one of the last pretty buildings on the sea boulevard.
Surfers!
The Mr and me
Ugly 80's architecture all around us...
Me later in the evening before we went to the movies.
